USFL Names Week 3 Players of the Week

Three weeks into the USFL and we’re down to one undefeated team. The south is looking strong, and that’s been reflected in the fan voting so far this season.

This weekend say the Birmingham Stallions and New Orleans Breakers go head to head to prove their early season dominance. The game started slow, but by the second half everything started to come together. After the conclusion of the game, it’s easy to see why 2 of the three showcased this week played in that matchup.

Let’s see who they were.

Offensive Player of the Week – Johnnie Dixon | New Orleans Breakers

For the second week in a row the New Orleans Breakers secure the offensive player of the week. This is in addition to continuing their streak of having a showcase player each week of the season so far.

Johnnie Dixon had 7 receptions resulting in 86 yards of offense and 2 touchdowns in their matchup against the Stallions. They couldn’t get the win, but Dixon was able to keep them competitive. They’ll look to get back into the win column next week when they take on the Houston Gamblers who have been having their own struggled on the field.

Defensive Player of the Week – DeMarquis Gates | Birmingham Stallions

It would make sense that the Birmingham Stallions would have a presence on this list, as their the only undefeated team remaining. In their last outing the Stallions defense came out strong, holding back the offense heavy New Orleans Breakers.

DeMarquis Gates had 10 tackles and an interception during the matchup, earning his team another win and himself the title of defensive player of the week.

Birmingham will need to rely on Gates and their defense next week when they Take on the Tampa Bay Bandits if they want to keep their winning streak going.

Special Teams Player of the Week – Tyler Rausa | Tampa Bay Bandits

Last but not least is Tyler Rausa coming in to claim the special teams player of the week spot. This comes off of his game winning field goal this past weekend against the Houston Gamblers.

Rausa went 2/3 on field goals, but knocked it in when it mattered the most. The Bandits ended up edging out the Gamblers 27-26 after trailing for the entire matchup.
