This past weekend fans from all over the country traveled down to Birmingham, AL to watch the opening weekend of USFL action. The first game which was simulcast on FOX and NBC pulled in over 3M viewers, and the follow-up game the next day on NBC drew over 2M.
One thing that most seemed to agree on is that the quality of play and broadcasting was very good.
With week 1 in the books, the USFL let the fans help vote on who the defensive and offensive players of the week would be. After the voting concluded, we have our answer.

J’Mar Smith came into the game for the Stallions, after a minor Alex McGough injury. The young QB was able to command his team, move the ball and even add a few touchdowns to his resume. At the end of the day, Smith was critical in Birmingham’s defeat of the New Jersey Generals.
The USFL social teams have since caught up with J’Mar Smith where he reacts to becoming the leagues first offensive player of the week.

On the defensive end, we have the New Orleans Breakers defensive end Davin Bellamy taking the player of the week spot. The matchup between the Breakers and Stars was a close one, but the New Orleans defense came out on top.

We’re only one week in, and so far the South division is undefeated. We’ve seen strong defense out of Houston, New Orleans and Tampa Bay. At the moment, it looks like you may want to keep an eye out on the South, but it’ll be interesting to see what happens as they teams start playing against each other.
Next week we’ll see the New Orleans Breakers take on the Tampa Bay Bandits in the ‘Breaker Bay Brawl’, and it could turn out to be a low scoring game with strong defense on both sides.
