It’s been a huge year for the USFL so far. Going into 2022 it was expected that we’d see a rapid fire of announcements from the league, and they have not disappointed.
Back in June was when we first learned that FOX would be rebooting the USFL, coming in as a majority owner. There was many months without news, but since October the USFL has really ramped up their marketing efforts. We’ve seen the first round of executive hires, team names, divisional breakdowns and the first four head coaches.
FOX and the USFL have leaned heavily on Colin Cowherd and The Herd to push out many of their announcements on FS1. The latest news to come through the pipeline is no different.
Earlier today the USFL shared on social media that the final four head coaches would be announced on The Herd, giving them another huge news piece to drop.

As fans were tuned in, Colin Cowherd mentioned that only two coaches would be revealed today. This leads up to speculate that the USFL is saving the final two for their big announcement in Birmingham, AL next week.
Needless to say, we’re now two coaches closer to knowing the full group that will be leading their respective teams this April.

- Pittsburgh Maulers -Kirby Wilson
- Birmingham Stallions – Skip Holtz
Skip Holtz most recently served as head coach for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs football team (2013-2021). Previously, he coached for the South Florida Bulls (2010–2012), East Carolina Pirates (2005–2009), and Connecticut Huskies (1994–1998). He has also served as an assistant coach for the South Carolina Gamecocks (1999–2004), Notre Dame Fighting Irish (1990–1993), Colorado State Rams (1989) and Florida State Seminoles (1987-1988).
Now, we look forward to next Tuesday where the USFL is set to hold an event at Protective Stadium for local media. With only two coaches left to be revealed, it seems that the league is ready to officially announce Birmingham as the central hub for 2022. If we’re lucky, maybe the league will give us those other two coaches during the press conference.
Skip’s father, Lou Holtz, is a former head football coach and worked as a commentator on the television channel ESPN. Due to his father’s career as a collegiate football coach, Skip was exposed to football from an early age.
Kirby Wilson previously served as a running backs coach in the NFL for 23 seasons. He coached for the New England Patriots, Washington Redskins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings, Cleveland Browns, Arizona Cardinals and Las Vegas Raiders. This is all great experience to bring to the new USFL.
We’ll keep you posted on all the latest news as more information comes out on the upcoming USFL season.
