The XFL Returns to the Spring League

The Spring League to Test OT Rules Inspired by the Baltimore Ravens

The Spring League returns May 6th on Fox, FS1 and FS2. This year the league looks to play out of two hub cities with an expanded group of eight teams. The North Division will be located at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and the South will be housed at Rice Stadium in Houston. Indy’s North Division will be home to the Alphas, Aviators, Conquerors and Linemen. The South Division out of Houston will house the Blues, Generals, Jousters and Sea Lions.

We know the coaches, we know how to watch on TV or in person, we also know the schedule… but, we’re now getting some info on some of the specific rules. One thing that caught the attention of many XFL fans was their unique approach to overtime. Unfortunately, we never got an opportunity to see it.

Well, The Spring League is going to be testing some innovations of their own. For the 2021 TSL season, the league will be utilizing some new OT rules that were influences by the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens.

The league outlines all of the specifics in it’s social media posting, giving a clear outline of what overtime will look like in The Spring League.

  • The overtime period will begin with a coin toss
  • The winner of the coin toss will have the choice of either:
    • Pick the spot of the ball and which end zone to defend OR
    • Choose whether to begin overtime on offense or defense
  • The overtime period will consist of one seven minute and 30 second period
  • Overtime will now begin with a kickoff. The offense will begin at the spot chosen during the coin toss
  • Each team will have two timeouts in overtime
  • If the score remains even at the end of overtime, the game will result in a tie

Unlike the XFL, the games CAN end in a tie. We’re hoping we get a chance to see at least one matchup head into OT.

With the XFL on the sidelines for 2021 and the CFL postponing their season until August, will you be tuning into The Spring League this season? Let us know down in the comments below or join the conversation on Discord.
