Stallions Re-Sign Bo Scarbrough, Cole Schneider, Willie Yarbary

The Birmingham Stallions continue to add key pieces in their quest to three-peat in the USFL. GM Zach Potter has been quite busy this offseason in retaining players who contribute at a high level.

RB Bo Scarbrough

Stallions’ fans will rejoice to know fan-favorite and former Alabama running back Bo Scarbrough will be back in 2024. Scarbrough joined the Stallions mid-season in 2022, making an immediate impact. He rushed for over 100 yards in his first two games as the starter, finishing the season with 526 yards and two touchdowns. He finished the season third in the league in rush yards per game and had zero turnovers.

Notably, he was most dominant when the Stallions needed him the most. In the USFL Championship, Scarbrough ran the ball 13 times for 135 yards (10.4 yards per carry), including a 36-yard touchdown scamper early in the game and a 70-yard run.

Unfortunately, Scarbrough missed the entire 2023 season with a knee injury. He had to have surgery but plans to be back for 2024. Watch for him to rotate with Stallions’ starting running back C. J. Marable—who also recently re-signed with the team—next season.

Center Cole Schneider

The Stallions lost three starting offensive linemen to the XFL after the 2022 season. It appeared they were going to have to rebuild again after losing three offensive linemen to the NFL this offseason. Fortunately for them, they already have one of those players back in center Cole Schneider. While he did not start every game, he was the Stallions’ utility lineman, filling in at center, guard, tight end, and even fullback on occasion.

Schneider rotated at center with Cohl Cabral in 2023. However, both players signed NFL contracts this offseason, leaving the Stallions without a center on their roster. Now, the Stallions have at least one guy they know they can count on to captain the o-line. Schneider brings his experience and impeccable sense of fashion back to Birmingham.

DT Willie Yarbary

On Monday, the Stallions announced they had re-signed defensive tackle Willie Yarbary. Yarbary has been the Stallions’ most productive interior defensive lineman since the USFL kicked off in 2022. In his first year in the league, he led all Stallions’ defensive linemen with 44 tackles and 5.5 sacks. He also added five tackles for loss and four pass deflections. He had one of his best games in the 2022 USFL Championship, registering five tackles, one tackle for loss, and two sacks.

Yarbary continued to produce at a high level in 2023. This past season he finished with 37 tackles, three tackles for loss, four sacks, two fumble recoveries, and two pass deflections. His 81 tackles and 9.5 sacks are the most by a Stallions defensive lineman in the modern USFL era. By bringing Yarbary back alongside defensive end Dondrea Tillman—who the Stallions also recently re-signed—Birmingham returns their two best players on the defensive line for 2024.

The Rebuild Continues

As far as we know, the Stallions only have four more players left to re-sign: wide receivers Adrian Hardy and Mookie Dereus, defensive end Jonathan Newsome, and safety Tyree Robinson. If they can ink deals with each of these players over the next few weeks, they will have successfully secured all of their 2023 roster heading into 2024 (other than players who were released for NFL opportunities or otherwise).

Even if that happens, the Birmingham Stallions will still have a long way to go in rebuilding their roster due to so many players leaving for the NFL. However, many of those players are now free agents, having been released by their respective NFL teams after preseason concluded. Look for several of them, like Schneider, to return to the Stallions in the weeks ahead.
