After a long and anticipated wait, Alex McGough has been announced as the USFL 2023 MVP. The Birmingham Stallions are in the USFL Championship game, and it’s largely because of the remarkable season that Alex McGough put together for Skip Holtz and this team.
This MVP announcement is no surprise. McGough led the USFL in multiple categories this season, absolutely dominating opponents on a weekly basis.
While there were plenty of qualified candidates in the league this year, Alex McGough simply stood above the rest due to his consistency.
His final 2023 season stats were:
180/267 (67.4%)
2,104 passing yards
7.9 YPA
20 passing TD
5 INT
108.3 QBR
In addition, he was electrifying on the ground:
403 rushing yards
5.8 YPC
5 rushing TD
Alex McGough’s 25 total touchdowns are a modern USFL record. His outstanding performances earned him three Offensive Player of the Week awards throughout the season.
Week 2
Alex McGough’s first OPOW came in week two, when the Birmingham Stallions obliterated the Memphis Showboats 42-2. It was a lopsided affair from the first snap. Alex was unstoppable, throwing for 301 yards and four touchdowns, while averaging 10.8 YPA.

Week 6
In week six, Birmingham dominated the Michigan Panthers on the road. McGough put on a show through the air and on the ground, dazzling with his dual threat capabilities.

Alex finished the game with 133 passing yards and two touchdowns. In addition, he posted 82 rushing yards and a ten yard scamper to the end zone.
Week 10
The final game of the season didn’t hold too much meaning for Birmingham, who had already clinched a playoff berth. However, that didn’t stop Alex from doing his thing. McGough threw for 282 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Stallions to a comeback victory over the Showboats.

Playoff Brilliance
Last week, everyone was in awe of what Alex McGough was able to accomplish. Against one of the USFL’s best defenses in the New Orleans Breakers, McGough made them look like high schoolers as he picked them apart piece by piece.
Alex McGough to Davion Davis has been an impossible connection to stop in the #USFL this season.@14DDavis magically spins his way out of multiple tackles, and the @USFLStallions are in business with a double digit lead!pic.twitter.com/ImbexTeLtI

Birmingham scored 47 points, with McGough responsible for most of those. Alex threw for 310 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 10.0 YPA. On the ground, he added 84 yards and a score.
Alex McGough is simply playing football on an entirely different level this half.
There's absolutely no way this man isn't on an NFL team after this #USFL season. What he's done in 2023 is simply absurd.
How many NFL QB's are making this throw in game?pic.twitter.com/vLNApbBYIw

It was a mesmerizing performance, and one that caught national attention.
Season Dominance
Throughout the USFL season, Alex McGough was clutch for Birmingham. In week eight against Philadelphia, Alex led the team down the field in the final seconds, putting the Stallions in front late on a dart to La’Michael Pettway. An argument could’ve been made for another OPOW award in this game, as Alex threw for 333 yards and three touchdowns.
What a game this has been. Alex McGough finds La'Michael Pettway for the go-ahead score with under 30 seconds to go, and the @USFLStallions are back in front.
It's been an entertaining day for #USFL football. You love to see it.pic.twitter.com/UjtJTfKrIF

Week nine against Houston was a crucial game, with postseason implications. After going down early, McGough turned the tides, throwing for over 200 yards and two scores – sending Birmingham to the playoffs.
The @USFLStallions are now in full control of this ball game. Alex McGough drops a dime deep to Deon Cain, who secures it for the score, and Birmingham leads 17-9.

Final Thoughts
There is absolutely no doubt about it: Alex McGough deserved to win the USFL 2023 MVP. We’ve seen some special campaigns in the USFL over the past two years, but McGough has elevated his play to an entirely new level.
In the offseason, it’d be expected to see Alex garner plenty of NFL interest. However, before then, he has an opportunity to win back-to-back Championships with the Birmingham Stallions.
The @USFL is straight comedy sometimes man 😂 this is one of the funniest things I've seen in a minute. McGough & Holtz are such a fun duo.
Love the all-access broadcasting we get in this league. #USFLpic.twitter.com/YPUqcouquf
