Micah Abernathy, a safety for the Houston Gamblers in the USFL, is making the leap to the NFL. He was sensational for the Gamblers in 2022, and is now being rewarded for his efforts. It was announced today that Micah signed with the Green Bay Packers, after a successful tryout with the team earlier this week.
The #Packers signed safety Micah Abernathy today and he practiced without having seen the playbook. Here's his story of the USFL and a famous grandfather.https://t.co/L6jLvBCP9q
There is no doubt about it: Houston featured some of the USFL’s best defenders. Abernathy was no exception, putting up spectacular numbers throughout the year. Had it not been for Micah’s efforts, the team likely would have lost more games than they did.
G CODE ON ANOTHER LEVEL 📊@Cover22_ with the interception! 👏👏
He finished the season with over 70 tackles, and two interceptions. Micah was certainly an elite safety, especially down the stretch. One of his season highlights came in week nine, where the team handed Birmingham their first loss due to a late interception by Abernathy.
Micah did spend some time with the Indianapolis Colts in 2019, but was cut before seeing the field that season. He was with the Dallas Renegades in the XFL during their 2020 season, but of course that was cut short because of COVID.
Now, Abernathy has another opportunity to pursue his NFL dreams with Green Bay. Had it not been for the national exposure that the USFL provided him with, who knows if this would have been a possibility.
I talked with Micah Abernathy last night and he told me he was signing with the Packers today. So happy for Micah. He earned this shot with the NFL. No safety in the USFL played better then Micah in the last half of the season. That makes 6 Gamblers in NFL camps.
