Houston Gamblers Head Coach Kevin Sumlin Reportedly Takes Role with Maryland

Going into USFL season 2, we’ve seen a couple of head coaching moves. First, John DeFilippo came in to replace Larry Fedora in New Orleans, and more recently Mike Nolan has taken over head coaching duties for Jeff Fisher for the Panthers.

It looks like another possible shift may be in place. Jeff Ermann of InsideMDSports.com reports that Kevin Sumlin has taken a role with Maryland to serve as the teams co-offensive coordinator.

This story is very much still developing, so there’s not very many details on hand.

We’ve reached out to USFL representatives to get more information on if Sumlin will be returning to coach the Houston Gamblers in season 2. At the time of publication we have not heard back.

We’ll keep you posted as more information comes in on this story.

UPDATE: The USFL has hired Curtis Johnson to replace Kevin Sumlin as head coach of the Houston Gamblers.

If Kevin Sumlin departs the Houston Gamblers, who would you like to see come in to take over the role? Let us know your thoughts down in the comments below or join the conversation on Discord.

  1. Wishing Kevin Sumlin well if he leaves for greener pastures. If this is so we have a quick turnaround time as we have a draft and camp coming soon. In addition to my favorites that I mention for any of these jobs like Rick Neuheisel and Matt Cavanaugh, I think a call should be made to the following….Mike Sherman, Former Falcons coach Mike Smith, Mike Tice, Brad Childress. Kevin Gilbride who has a connection, but my favorite Mike on this list is Mike Munchak. He has experience as a coach and player and almost no one has a better connection to Houston than Mike Munchak.
