No. 1 Overall Pick Ben Holmes Released By New Jersey Generals, Luis Perez Signed

Former New Jersey Generals QB Ben Holmes Signs with Montreal Alouettes

Ben Holmes was selected 4th overall by the New Jersey Generals in the inaugural USFL Draft. Although the league had a short training camp prior to kickoff, Coach Riley didn’t think Holmes fit his offense, ultimately letting him go and signing Luis Perez.

The release was originally thought to be due to an injury, but the league’s docuseries “United by Football” showed a different side of the story. Ultimately, Coach Riley felt that he had to find someone else to lead the franchise.

Many were surprised by his release, mainly because he was one of the 1st round selections in the draft. But, it’s didn’t take long for Holmes to find a new home. Earlier today it was revealed he’s heading up north to the CFL to join the Montreal Alouettes.

The CFL is set to kickoff their preseason later this month on the 23rd. Holmes could potentially see his first action on the 28th when the Alouettes take on the 2021 Grey Cup Champions; Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

We’re happy to see Holmes continue his career, and maybe we’ll see him in the USFL again in the future.
