Earlier this week we reported that Birmingham officials had approved a memorandum of understanding for some United States Football League (USFL) games to be held in the city.
Parks and Recreation Board president Montal Morton joined CBS 42 to discuss details of the talks between the city and the USFL’s parent company National Spring Football League (NSFL).
According to Morton, under a tentative agreement the USFL would play a minimum of six games at Legion Field and use it as a practice facility for all teams. The remaining matchups would be held at the cities new field, Protective Stadium.
We are in negotiations of actually completing the partnership, we’ll be working with the city of Birmingham, the mayor’s office, the council’s office to make sure this is a win win for the city of Birmingham.”
Morton also says the Birmingham Parks and Rec, as well as other city officials, are moving aggressively to make this deal happen.
From what we reported earlier this week, it looks like both parties are looking to have a deal finalized by the 22nd, so we should have more details by next week at the latest.
If the deal is approved, the league would be targeting an April 15th kickoff. The season would span 10-weeks, with two semi-finals prior to the championship game on July 3rd. The schedule has yet to be finalized, but these are the dates they’re looking at.
