BJCC and USFL Reach Tentative Agreement to Host 2022 Season in Birmingham

Birmingham Officials Set to Approve USFL Games at Legion Field

It’s been a long road for the USFL, but it seems that things are about to be finalized for their central hub in 2022.

Back in October reports started surfacing that USFL officials were in talks with representatives from the city of Birmingham, AL to host the entirety of their 2022 season.

The deal would see a majority of the matchups take place at the new Protective Stadium, with training camps and select games housed out of Legion Field.

Since the news on the location surfaced, we’ve seen a lot more come out of the league. We’ve seen the first round of executive hires, team names and logos and even the first set of head coaches. That being said, the location still hasn’t been made official by the league. Well, it looks like it should be coming soon.

Roy S. Johnson reports that the the Birmingham City Council’s Budget & Finance committee was expected to approve a resolution that would allow the USFL to utilize Legion Field in 2022.

On Monday, the City Council’s Budget & Finance committee is expected to approve a resolution for the mayor to execute an agreement with USFL’s FOX Sports-led ownership group to provide up to $500,000 of in-kind services to mitigate the cost of playing eight to 11 USFL games at Legion Field. The other games will be played at Protective Stadium.

If all goes as planned, the resolution should be fully approved by Tuesday. This seems to have been the last step to occur before the deal could be final and ready to announce.

Going into 2022 it was expected that we’d be hearing from the league a lot more, and they have been delivering on that. Starting out the year we learned the official kickoff date, details around their player selection process, incentive programs and even the first four head coaches.

We’re expecting to hear the second round of coaches soon, and it looks like we’ll finally get confirmation on the central hub as well.
