Yesterday we reported that the Birmingham City Council was set to vote on a resolution to approve usage of Legion Field for the USFL in 2022.
On Monday, the City Council’s Budget & Finance committee is expected to approve a resolution for the mayor to execute an agreement with USFL’s FOX Sports-led ownership group to provide up to $500,000 of in-kind services to mitigate the cost of playing eight to 11 USFL games at Legion Field. The other games will be played at Protective Stadium.
Just now, we have word that the deal has gone through as expected. Jon Paepcke of WVTM13 reported that the Birmingham City Council has officially approved the proposal and is set to provide up to $500,000 in funding via services.

Back in October reports started surfacing that USFL officials were in talks with representatives from the city of Birmingham, AL to host the entirety of their 2022 season.
The deal would see a majority of the matchups take place at the new Protective Stadium, with training camps and select games housed out of Legion Field.
After many months, it looks like everything is finally finalized for the leagues bubble location. With the deal now good to go, we expect that the USFL will put out an official statement confirming the news.
We expected that the league would be shedding more light on their debut season as we rolled into the new year, and so far they’ve delivered on that promise. Last week alone we learned about the leagues player selection process, player and staff incentives, the kickoff date and the first four head coaches.
The next set of head coaches should be coming shortly, so we think it’s possible that the league will officially confirm Birmingham around the same time.
